Lifehouse Maternity Home: A New Chapter in Ministry
For over 17 years, Lifehouse Maternity Home in Louisville has been a beacon of hope, offering a Christ-centered sanctuary for hundreds of mothers and their children, and referrals and resources to thousands more. Our ministry provides not only a safe place for women and children, but also guidance, equipping these women with life skills, accountability, and the truth of God’s Word to prepare them for a stable future. At the heart of our mission is the call to reflect Jesus’ love, teaching moms the value of work and provision for their families while keeping faith as our foundation.
One of the greatest challenges our mothers face is securing a safe, reliable place for their children while they work or attend school. Although most of our moms qualify for childcare assistance vouchers, finding a provider that accepts them, has openings for their child’s age, and is accessible by public transit or near their workplace is a daunting task. Since 2020, Jefferson County has lost approximately 80 childcare centers due to staffing shortages, financial struggles, and the end of federal pandemic aid. Moreover, many of our moms, shaped by personal trauma and mainstream and social media narratives of “danger,” hesitate to entrust their children to unfamiliar caregivers. Two years ago, Lifehouse Maternity Home leadership prayerfully began exploring solutions to this obstacle our moms were continually facing. There are other maternity homes in the country that provide children’s programming to participants, program alumni, and even children in the community.
After researching these programs and considering off-site options, it was determined that the most feasible path is to establish an in-home dependent supervision assistance program within our existing facility. This vision requires modifications, including adding a staircase for a secondary emergency exit and a safe exit to the playground from the lower level, where the new program will be housed; upgrading our security system and adding cameras for safety; improving our playground with a new fence and concrete play area; and trimming surrounding trees around the playground.
Beyond renovations, this new program will require ongoing resources, including supplies and three dedicated staff members to provide 12 hours of daily children’s programming, Monday through Friday. While these additions will significantly impact our budget, we believe introducing this in-home dependent supervision assistance program is a vital step in supporting our mothers toward sustainable stability and nurturing their children in the love of Christ. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, guiding children in God’s ways lays a foundation for their future.
Through this ministry, we will share Bible stories, sing songs of Jesus, and demonstrate the love of Christ to these precious young lives, planting seeds that can transform generations. I can think of nothing more valuable or important. I invite you to join us in prayer for this new program. God is already moving: we’ve acquired a few supplies at low cost from a closing childcare center, received a grant to replace our fence, and secured an architect and contractor to assist with the staircase project. We’ve also submitted grant requests for security upgrades and the concrete play area—please pray that these find favor with the grant funders. Prayerfully consider how you might support this work financially.
A monthly gift of $125 from 100 supporters, or an increase of $12.50 per month from 1,000 current donors, would cover ongoing expenses for this new program. Consider a gift to Give for Good on September 18th as a good starting point. As we develop this program, opportunities may arise to volunteer or donate supplies. Please pray for qualified, Godly staff to join our team in implementing and guiding this program. God continues to provide for Lifehouse, and we trust in His faithfulness and provision as we step out in this new venture. I am deeply grateful for you, our faithful supporters, who partner with us to minister to the mothers and babies God entrusts to our care. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may His face shine upon you, and may He grant you peace.
